195: Caryatid Mar 2022

A caryatid is a female figure used as a column in Greek arcitecture.

It's a lousy job. If you're not robust of body and spirit, you just might get weighed down. Rodin sculpted this girl in 1880. She's not a full grown woman, just a teen-age girl. She doesn't quit, she's still holding up her responsibilities, but it's taking a toll. The job of single mom comes to mind.

The sculpture collections of the world are little-by-little being digitized and put out on the internet for free download. This piece has been 3D printed using a smoky black liquid resin as the raw material; it's not the more common solid plastic filament. It is hollow, and slightly translucent. Serendipitously, some of the resin got captured inside. Resin activates and cures in the presence of UV light. Who knows, it may take days, weeks even years to get enough UV exposure for the liquid to solidify.
