93.8: SHOPPING IN MEXICO: July 2008
Dateline: Chichen Itza, July 9, AM, 2008.
- This is my collection from Hannah's snap shots taken July 7 & 8, 2008 while traveling in Mexico. We're in Cancun now but the photos are from earlier in our travels. One might call this collection Shopping in Mexico:
- It's a banana republic after all. The fruit and nuts and honey would all be locally grown and harvested by hand.
- Zapaterias means shoe store.
- Todo a $5 = Everything sells at 5 pesos. The dollar symbol denotes peso here. 5 pesos is about 50 cents in US currency but the same stuff sells in the states for one dollar. Things are cheaper here by about that factor.
- Some people obtain their goods by "shopping" at the roadside dumps. Why there are dumps along the roadside is not known.
- The usual US company stores are here as well.
- Goods are laid out on tarps under shade trees. When you walk past, the vendors call out "One Dowl-lar".
- You can shop for personalized services. Eddie was our guide through Chichen Itza. The sites are roped off nowadays. No climbing the steps anymore.
- And of course you can buy photographs of the archeological sites taken at the ideal time. For instance, at dawn on the Spring Equinox, the corners of the pyramid cast their shadows on the balustrade of the steps. At the bottom of the steps is a stone snake's head. So the moving shadow looks like the snake is coming out of the temple and slithering down the steps. Hannah took a snap of a cellophane covered page from a book.
