April 2012

Hiroshige (family name Utagawa) (1797-1858) a.k.a. Ando Hiroshige was a Japanese artist in the ukiyo-o tradition.

He is known because his works were reproduced in woodblock print format and published in bound coffee table volumes. This one is from a popular travel book called "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" . It has been often copied over the years, including by no less an artist than Vincent Van Gogh. And now by Smelloshigè.
