123: Mt. Fuji

April 2013

The formal name of this piece is "The Fields of Sekiya by the Sumida River". I just call it Mt. Fuji which is what everyone recognizes.

It was painted by Katsushika Hokusai in 1840 or so. The painting was transformed into color woodblock prints, either by the artist or by his assistants.

This print appeared as one of the bound book of prints called "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji".

The colors here are straight out of the tube, no mixing. Every patch of color is outlined in black. It felt like a paint-by-numbers project, but very tiny and tedious.
